Our App takes you on a tour of the seven great houses of Scotland, the unique Thirlestane Castle near Lauder in the Scottish Borders with its four drum towers. Home to the Earls of Lauderdale and members of the Clan Maitland, its history spans the sixteenth century to the current day and is intertwined with Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie and Napoleon Bonaparte. Explore the lavish and opulent state rooms, the original keep built to withstand reivers’ raids, and the recreation of life below stairs.
Thirlestane dates back to the fourteenth century and the central part of the present Castle was completed in 1590, remodelled in the 1670s and then again in the 1840s. The Maitlands came to Britain from France with William the Conquerer after which marriage brought the lands of Lauderdale into the family. Today the Castle is still home to the Mailtland family.
